Faculty Intent

The mathematics curriculum is built to foster a love of learning and the important link of mathematics to the real-life context. Enrichment activities are built in throughout the curriculum to engage, challenge and extend learning beyond the classroom. We teach declarative components for each strand of mathematics, extend conditional knowledge and incorporate key mathematical knowledge into all topic areas, with a clear progression throughout a student's time at Holyhead School.

Our curriculum will give students opportunities to develop their mathematical skills and develop knowledge that results in them becoming more inquisitive, local, resilient and independent problem solvers and have empathy. Moreover, we believe that students deserve a creative and ambitious mathematics curriculum, rich in skills and knowledge, which ignites curiosity and prepares them well for everyday life and future employment. Deliberate time is built in to develop communication and reasoning skills and learn strategies to solve complex problems.

What are the key skills of a mathematician?

  • Analyse patterns
  • Draw conclusions
  • Present data
  • Understand and respond to information
  • Justify opinions and proof
  • Interpret and represent data
  • Problem solve
  • Manipulate equations
